Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone for the state’s second ropeway project, connecting Biswanath Ghat to Umatumuni River Island. The ₹60-crore project, unveiled on March 31, 2025, aims to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in the region. The ropeway, spanning 446 meters, is designed to transport passengers in just three minutes, with a capacity of 300 passengers per hour.
Speaking at the event, Sarma highlighted the project’s significance in promoting tourism and easing travel for devotees visiting the sacred island. He also inaugurated an automatic driving testing station in Biswanath district, built at a cost of ₹17 crore, to ensure vehicle fitness and reduce road accidents.
The ropeway project, modeled by the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, is expected to be completed within 18–24 months. Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises and announced plans for additional infrastructure developments, including a medical college, sports stadium, and nursing college in the district.
