India has reached a historic milestone by producing over 1 billion tonnes of coal in the financial year 2024-25, marking a significant achievement in the country’s energy sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed this accomplishment as a “proud moment” and a “historic milestone,” emphasizing its importance for India’s energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance.
A Landmark Achievement
The milestone was achieved 11 days ahead of the previous fiscal year’s total coal production of 997.83 million tonnes. This remarkable feat reflects the combined efforts of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private sector players, and a dedicated workforce of approximately 5 lakh mine workers operating across more than 350 coal mines.
Government Reforms and Policies
The success of this initiative is attributed to strategic reforms and policies implemented by the government, including amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and the commercial auctioning of coal blocks. These measures have significantly increased domestic coal availability, reduced dependence on imports, and contributed to foreign exchange savings of approximately ₹42,315.7 crore during April to December 2024.
