Tripura BJP Minister Offers Cooperation to Reinstall Ex-Deputy CM’s Statue

Tripura’s Social Welfare Minister, Tinku Roy, has extended an offer of cooperation to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) for reinstalling the statue of former Deputy Chief Minister Baidyanath Majumder. The statue, originally installed in 2012, was vandalized following the 2018 Assembly elections, an act attributed to public resentment against the Left Front’s 25-year rule.

Speaking at a public event, Roy clarified that the vandalism was not orchestrated by the BJP but was a result of widespread anger among the people. He added that the remains of the statue had caused multiple accidents at the site, prompting requests for its removal. Recently, an idol of Lord Rama was installed at the same location, sparking demands from CPM leaders to restore Majumder’s statue.

In response to a letter from CPM Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Roy stated, “If they desire to reinstall the statue in front of their party office, we will cooperate.” Chaudhury had urged the government to relocate the Lord Rama idol and reinstate Majumder’s statue at its original site in Kailashahar town, Unakoti district.

The incident has reignited political debates in Tripura, with CPM leaders accusing the BJP of neglecting the legacy of Majumder, a prominent figure in the state’s political history. Roy’s offer of cooperation is seen as an attempt to address these concerns while maintaining the BJP’s stance on the issue.
