Mahila Samriddhi Yojana: Delhi Government to Roll Out ₹2,500 Monthly Aid to Women from March 8

The Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, a key promise made by the BJP leadership during their campaign, is set to be implemented in Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that women in Delhi will start receiving ₹2,500 per month from March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Despite the scheme not being finalized in the first cabinet meeting on Thursday, officials from the Delhi government departments have indicated that no draft or demand for the scheme has reached them so far. An official, speaking to News18 on condition of anonymity, mentioned that a cabinet note from the previous government, approved in December, covered all women in Delhi with a few exceptions. The new ministers will need to decide on the specifics of the scheme.

In December 2024, then Chief Minister Atishi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had approved ₹1,000 per month for all women in Delhi, excluding taxpayers, government employees, and those already receiving financial assistance from the government. The registration for the scheme was conducted by AAP workers, but there is no record of the number of potential candidates.

Implementation Process

Explaining the implementation process, another official stated that a cabinet note will need to be approved, detailing the eligibility criteria, exclusion criteria, registration process, and deadlines. The government will also need to decide on the budget for the scheme before it can be implemented.

In December 2024, the AAP government had allocated ₹2,000 crore for the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojna, aiming to provide ₹1,000 per month to eligible women in Delhi. However, the Finance Department noted that the scheme would require ₹4,550 crore for disbursals to eligible women, despite the allocated amount.

Current Government’s Plan

The BJP government has prioritized the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, promising ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance to women from poor families. The scheme is expected to cover around 20-25 lakh women, excluding those from middle and upper-middle-class families. The exact definition of “poor women” will need to be decided before implementation.

The BJP’s manifesto promised to provide financial assistance to women, and the first installment of the monthly support is expected to be credited to eligible women’s accounts by March 8. The newly sworn-in Delhi Cabinet will meet to finalize the guidelines and budget for the scheme.

As the potential beneficiaries await the implementation of the scheme, all eyes will be on the upcoming cabinet meetings to see how the government allocates funds and defines eligibility criteria for the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana.
