The Tripura government has announced an ambitious five-year plan to significantly increase bamboo production for industrial use. The plan aims to expand the existing 461.32 hectares to 45,000 hectares by 2025-26, giving a substantial boost to the state’s bamboo sector and positioning Tripura as a leading supplier of bamboo products in India.
Currently, Tripura meets nearly 70% of the country’s demand for the manufacturing of agarbattis (incense sticks). According to the Forest Survey of India report in 2023, the state has approximately 4.2 lakh hectares of land occupied by bamboo, with 21 types of bamboo being cultivated. However, only a limited extent of this land is suitable for industrial-scale production.
### Focus on Streamlined Supply Chain
Subhash Chandra Das, Additional Mission Director of the Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM), emphasized the plan’s focus on creating a streamlined supply chain to improve bamboo accessibility for industries. “Transportation from remote areas has been a significant challenge. By cultivating bamboo on private land in more accessible locations, we aim to resolve this issue,” Das stated.
### High-Density Bamboo Plantations
The Tripura Bamboo Plantation Development Scheme will promote high-density bamboo plantations, supported by government organizations such as MGNREGA and the Tribal Welfare Department. Market demand for bamboo is expected to double from 2 lakh metric tons to 4 lakh metric tons per annum in the coming years, with the expansion of existing and emerging bamboo-based industries.
### Integrated Bamboo Park
The state government also plans to establish an Integrated Bamboo Park in Unakoti district. This initiative will require a regular supply of high-quality bamboo, further enhancing economic opportunities for farmers in the region.
### Conclusion
The Tripura government’s five-year plan to boost bamboo production is set to transform the state’s bamboo sector. By addressing supply chain challenges, promoting high-density plantations, and developing an Integrated Bamboo Park, Tripura aims to become a leading supplier of bamboo products in India, driving economic growth and creating new opportunities for local farmers.
