Jammu & Kashmir Records 6.1% Unemployment Rate in 2023-24, Over 3.7 Lakh Youths Registered as Job Seekers

The Jammu and Kashmir government has reported an unemployment rate of 6.1% for individuals aged 15 years and above during the fiscal year 2023-24, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The announcement was made during a recent session of the Legislative Assembly.

As of January 2025, a total of 3,70,811 unemployed youths have voluntarily registered on the Union Territory’s employment portal. To address the issue, the government has implemented several self-employment schemes under initiatives such as Mumkin, Tejaswini, Mission Youth, PMEGP, and REGP. These programs have collectively generated approximately 9.58 lakh self-employment opportunities since 2021, with 1.36 lakh opportunities created in the current fiscal year alone.

Additionally, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the government has generated 3.01 crore person-days of employment, benefiting over 8 lakh households. To further encourage entrepreneurship and skill development, the government has launched Mission YUVA, an ambitious initiative aimed at establishing 1.35 lakh entrepreneurship units and creating employment for 4.5 lakh youth in the region.

The administration continues to promote skill development through specialized training programs and regular job fairs, bridging the gap between job seekers and employers while encouraging private sector employment.
