- Part of the ₹46,000 crore Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, it ensures all-weather rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.

- The project was originally sanctioned in the mid-1990s and declared a National Project in 2002 under Vajpayee’s leadership.
