WhatsApp Bans 9.7 Million Indian Accounts in February for Policy Violations

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has banned over 9.7 million accounts in India during February 2025, citing violations of its Terms of Service. This action was revealed in the company’s latest Monthly Safety Report, published in compliance with India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Of the total accounts banned, more than 1.4 million were proactively removed before any user complaints were filed. WhatsApp attributed this sweeping action to its investment in advanced artificial intelligence (AI) moderation tools and a proactive approach to preventing abuse on the platform.

The bans were primarily aimed at curbing activities such as spamming, unauthorized use of automated messaging tools, and the dissemination of fake news. WhatsApp emphasized that behaviors like adding users to groups without consent, sending unsolicited messages, and over-forwarding unverified content could lead to account suspension. The platform also warned against the misuse of broadcast lists and the use of modified versions of the app.

A WhatsApp spokesperson stated, “Over the years, WhatsApp has consistently invested in AI and other state-of-the-art technologies, data scientists, and experts to keep our users safe on our platform.” The company also urged users to follow digital etiquette and respect its Terms of Service to avoid account bans.

For users who believe their accounts were banned unfairly, WhatsApp offers an appeal process through the app. Users can request a review by entering a six-digit code sent via SMS and providing relevant details to support their case.

This proactive enforcement highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for its over 500 million users in India. The company continues to encourage responsible usage and adherence to its policies to ensure a positive experience for all.
