WhatsApp Can Now Be Set as Default Messaging and Calling App on iPhone

In a groundbreaking update, WhatsApp has introduced a feature that allows iPhone users to set the app as their default for messaging and calling. This development comes as part of Apple’s iOS 18.2 update, which enables third-party apps to function as default communication tools.

To activate this feature, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version (v25.8.74) from the App Store. Once updated, they can navigate to the Settings app on their iPhone, select “Apps,” and then choose “Default Apps.” From there, WhatsApp can be set as the default app for both calls and messages. This functionality streamlines communication by automatically launching WhatsApp when users tap on a phone number or message link in Safari, Contacts, or other apps.

Initially introduced for European Union users due to regulatory changes, this feature has now been expanded globally. It reflects Apple’s shift towards greater customization and flexibility in its ecosystem.

For users who rely heavily on WhatsApp for communication, this update simplifies their experience by centralizing calls, messages, and multimedia sharing within a single app. However, the feature is currently rolling out in phases, so some users may need to wait for its availability.

This update marks a significant step in enhancing user convenience and integrating third-party apps into Apple’s ecosystem. As the rollout continues, more iPhone users can look forward to leveraging WhatsApp as their primary communication tool.
