Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature for iPhone users, allowing real-time online activity tracking within group chats. This update, part of the latest iOS version 25.8.74, aims to enhance communication and user engagement by providing a snapshot of members’ online statuses directly within group conversations.
The feature enables users to see which group members are currently active, promoting timely interactions and improving group coordination. However, privacy remains a priority, as the feature respects users’ settings for “Last Seen” and “Online Status.” Those who have disabled these options will not appear in the real-time activity list.
This update is part of WhatsApp’s broader efforts to improve user experience on iOS. Other recent enhancements include the ability to transfer chats between iPhones without relying on iCloud, redesigned sticker trays, and support for Passkeys—a secure, passwordless login method.
The real-time activity feature is gradually rolling out to iPhone users and is expected to be available to all in the coming weeks.
