Hero MotoCorp Launches E85-Capable Motorcycles

Hero MotoCorp, the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters, officially launched its first flex-fuel variants of the iconic Splendor+ and HF Deluxe in India this week. With prices starting at Rs 72,792, these motorcycles are designed to run on E85 fuel—a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline—marking a significant shift in the domestic two-wheeler market toward sustainable mobility.

The Context of Ethanol Integration

The introduction of these flex-fuel models aligns with the Indian government’s aggressive roadmap to increase ethanol blending in petrol. By transitioning to E85, Hero MotoCorp aims to reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on imported crude oil, a primary objective of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Strategic Shift Toward Sustainable Fuels

The flex-fuel technology allows engines to automatically adjust to varying fuel compositions, ensuring optimal performance regardless of the ethanol-to-petrol ratio. This engineering flexibility is crucial for a country where fuel infrastructure is still evolving. By targeting high-volume commuter bikes like the Splendor, Hero is positioning sustainable technology for the mass market rather than confining it to premium segments.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently highlighted the economic potential of this transition, noting that if just 1% of annual petrol vehicle sales shift to E85, the nation could save approximately ₹195 crore in foreign exchange. The move is viewed as a practical, scalable solution to bridge the gap between internal combustion engines and fully electric platforms.

Industry analysts suggest that the launch is a strategic hedge against volatile global oil prices. While electric vehicles (EVs) have garnered significant attention, the transition for rural and semi-urban consumers remains challenging due to range anxiety and charging infrastructure.
