Tensions escalated along the Israel-Lebanon border as Israeli forces launched airstrikes and artillery attacks on southern Lebanon on Saturday. The strikes were in response to rockets fired from Lebanese territory, which Israel claimed to have intercepted near the northern border town of Metula.
The Israeli military targeted Hezbollah strongholds, marking the first major exchange since a ceasefire agreement in November 2024. Lebanese state media reported that at least two people were killed and eight others injured in the strikes, including children. The attacks have raised fears of renewed conflict in the region, with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warning of the risks of a “new war”.
Israel has held the Lebanese government responsible for the rocket fire, with Defense Minister Israel Katz stating, “We will not allow rocket fire from Lebanon on the Galilee communities”. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has denied involvement, calling Israel’s accusations a pretext for continued aggression.
The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed alarm over the violence, urging all parties to avoid escalation. As the situation unfolds, the fragile stability in the region remains under threat.
