IPL 2025: Sunil Narine Escapes Hit-Wicket Call in Controversial Moment During KKR vs RCB Clash

The IPL 2025 season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens witnessed a dramatic moment involving KKR’s star all-rounder Sunil Narine. The incident sparked debate among fans and players alike, as Narine narrowly escaped being declared out hit-wicket under unusual circumstances.

During the eighth over of KKR’s innings, bowled by RCB pacer Rasikh Salam, Narine attempted a powerful swing at a delivery that was eventually called a wide. In the process, his bat accidentally grazed the stumps, dislodging one of the bails. While RCB players appealed for a hit-wicket dismissal, the on-field umpires ruled Narine not out, citing the MCC Laws of Cricket.

According to MCC Law 35.1.1, a batter is out hit-wicket if their bat or body breaks the stumps while the ball is in play. However, since the delivery was declared a wide, the ball was no longer in play, and the hit-wicket rule did not apply. This technicality allowed Narine to continue his innings, much to the relief of KKR fans.

Narine went on to score a crucial 44 off 26 balls, forming a 103-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane, who contributed 56 runs. Despite their efforts, KKR managed a total of 174/8, which RCB chased down comfortably with seven wickets in hand and 22 balls to spare. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 59 and Phil Salt’s quickfire 56 were instrumental in RCB’s victory.

The controversial moment has since become a talking point, with cricket enthusiasts debating the interpretation of the rules and the umpire’s decision. As the IPL 2025 unfolds, such moments add to the drama and excitement of the tournament, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
