Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed an inquiry into the alleged incident where TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma was denied an audience with Gomati District Magistrate (DM) Tarit Kanti Chakma. The CM acknowledged concerns over a possible communication gap and assured that the matter would be resolved to maintain dignity and transparency in governance.
Pradyot Kishore’s Allegations
Debbarma, accompanied by Purna Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), attempted to meet DM Chakma at his Udaipur residence on May 25, 2025. However, security personnel allegedly denied them entry, prompting Debbarma to claim that his calls and messages to the DM had gone unanswered for over a month.
Political Reactions and Public Outrage
The incident has sparked controversy, with TIPRA Motha’s youth and student organizations demanding action against the DM and threatening statewide protests. Opposition leaders, including CPM’s Jitendra Chaudhury, condemned the DM’s behavior, calling it “unacceptable and arrogant”.
CM Manik Saha’s Response and Inquiry Order
CM Saha revealed that Debbarma had personally informed him about the issue while he was in Delhi. Following his return, Saha instructed Chief Secretary J K Sinha to conduct an official inquiry into the matter. He assured that no one’s dignity would be compromised and emphasized the need for a cordial administrative atmosphere.
Next Steps and Expected Resolution
While DM Chakma has yet to comment on the allegations, the inquiry is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Tripura government aims to prevent similar occurrences and ensure respectful interactions between public representatives and officials.
