Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has strongly condemned Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi for his controversial remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Speaking in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday, Adityanath called for Azmi’s removal from the SP and suggested that he be sent to Uttar Pradesh for “treatment.”
The Controversy
The remarks by Azmi, who is also the Maharashtra SP president, sparked widespread outrage. Azmi reportedly stated that Aurangzeb was not a “cruel administrator” and had even “built temples.” He further claimed that the conflict between Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was about state administration rather than religion. Following backlash, Azmi apologized, stating that his words were “twisted” and that he did not intend to disrespect historical figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj or Sambhaji Maharaj.
Yogi Adityanath’s Response
In a scathing attack, Adityanath questioned Azmi’s right to remain in the country, stating, “The person who feels ashamed about the heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and considers Aurangzeb his idol—does he have the right to stay in our country? Remove that person from the Samajwadi Party and send him to UP; we will do his treatment.”
Adityanath also criticized the SP for not condemning Azmi’s remarks, accusing the party of hypocrisy. “On one hand, you blame the Maha Kumbh, and on the other hand, you praise a person like Aurangzeb, who destroyed temples in the country,” he said.
Legal and Political Fallout
Azmi’s comments have led to multiple FIRs being filed against him in Maharashtra, including one under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Shiv Sena has demanded his suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly and called for sedition charges. Amid mounting pressure, Azmi was suspended from the Assembly for the remainder of the budget session.
Azmi’s Apology
In a video statement, Azmi clarified that his comments were based on historical accounts and not intended to hurt sentiments. “If anyone was hurt by my statement, I take back my words,” he said, while reiterating that his remarks were misinterpreted.
Broader Implications
The controversy has reignited debates over historical narratives and their political implications. Adityanath’s remarks reflect the BJP’s stance on preserving cultural heritage and countering narratives that glorify controversial historical figures.
This incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding historical interpretations in Indian politics and the potential for such remarks to escalate into larger political and social debates.
