Meghalaya CM Calls for Collaboration with Assam to Address Air Pollution

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has emphasized the need for a coordinated approach with Assam to tackle the alarming air pollution in Byrnihat, an industrial town on the Meghalaya-Assam border. Speaking in the Assembly on Wednesday, Sangma highlighted the shared responsibility of both states in addressing the issue, which has made Byrnihat one of India’s most polluted towns.

Byrnihat’s Pollution Crisis

Byrnihat, located between industrial zones of both states, has been ranked as India’s most polluted urban area for two consecutive years, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 341, categorized as “very poor.” The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified the region as critically polluted, citing emissions from red-category industries as a major contributor.

Government Actions in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has already taken stringent measures to curb pollution within the state. Surprise inspections conducted in January and February 2025 led to the closure of seven industrial units for violating environmental norms. Environmental compensation was also imposed on two units. Sangma assured that these inspections would continue, and strict action would be taken against any industry flouting regulations.

Call for Cross-State Coordination

Sangma announced plans to formally communicate with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate joint efforts in combating pollution. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the pollution control boards of both states to implement effective solutions. “To say that pollution is solely happening on one side of the border would not be fair. Both state governments and pollution control boards must work together,” he stated.

Community Involvement and Sustainable Practices

The Chief Minister also called on local communities to partner with the government in minimizing pollution. He highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and proactive measures to reduce environmental impact.

Looking Ahead

The Meghalaya government remains committed to addressing air pollution in Byrnihat and beyond. With cross-state collaboration and strict enforcement of environmental norms, the initiative aims to improve air quality and ensure a healthier environment for residents in the region.
