In a groundbreaking initiative, IIT Guwahati has partnered with HDFC Parivartan to launch technology-driven projects aimed at promoting sustainable development in Assam and Meghalaya. The collaboration focuses on enhancing food and energy security, boosting farmer incomes, and empowering rural communities through innovative solutions.
The program, titled “Focused Development Program: Enhancing Agriculture & Residue-Based Enterprises via Community Organizations,” includes three key interventions:
- Biomass Pellet Production Unit: Established in Meghalaya’s Umnowe Village, this facility converts agricultural biomass into eco-friendly pellets, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels like wood and coal. The initiative not only aids in waste management but also provides farmers with an additional income source.
- Agrivoltaics Farming and Tea Processing: Located in Assam’s Hailakandi district, this project combines solar power generation with agricultural activities. A solar-powered tea processing unit run by a Farmers Producer Company is helping local tea growers improve market access and product quality.
- Freeze-Drying and Herbal Processing Facility: Situated at IIT Guwahati, this facility uses advanced technology to extend the shelf life and market value of fruits, medicinal plants, and other agricultural products.
The initiative also emphasizes community mobilization, with training workshops and exposure visits for farmers to enhance their skills and knowledge. Over 500 individuals have participated in these programs, gaining insights into biomass collection, herbal processing, and agrivoltaic farming.
Dr. Siddhartha Singha, Project Coordinator at IIT Guwahati, highlighted the program’s alignment with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including ending hunger, promoting sustainable agriculture, and ensuring access to modern energy.
This collaboration between IIT Guwahati and HDFC Parivartan represents a significant step toward building resilient rural economies and fostering sustainable growth in Northeast India. The projects serve as model initiatives that can be replicated across other regions to address global challenges.
