Northeast India’s First Expressway to Cut Travel Time Between Guwahati and Silchar to Four Hours

The Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, held in Guwahati, has set the stage for a transformative era in Assam’s economic development. With Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹1.89 lakh crore signed on Day 1, the summit focuses on strengthening connectivity and mobility through significant investments in road, rail, and waterways infrastructure. 1. Road Infrastructure: ₹55,179 Crore Package
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled an ambitious ₹55,179 crore package to revolutionize Assam’s road connectivity. A marquee project includes the construction of a four-lane expressway between Guwahati and Barapani (Meghalaya) with a staggering ₹25,000 crore investment.

  • The expressway will feature multiple tunnels, connecting Panchgram’s industrial hub and reducing travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to under four hours.
  • This development is expected to boost regional trade and industrial growth significantly.

2. Railway Connectivity: Enhancing Passenger and Freight Movement
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced multiple projects to improve rail connectivity in Assam and the Northeast:

  • New Intercity Trains: Connecting Guwahati with Silchar and Agartala, enhancing passenger mobility across key cities.
  • Rail Network Expansion: Since 2014, 1,824 km of new railway lines have been constructed across Assam and the Northeast.
