Missouri Maintains Watchful Stance on World Cup Ticketing

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office currently has no plans to launch an investigation into FIFA’s ticketing practices, despite a growing wave of regulatory scrutiny from other U.S. states hosting 2026 World Cup matches. Public affairs specialist Colbey Stosberg confirmed this week that while the state is monitoring the situation, it has not yet received consumer complaints regarding the organization’s pricing strategies or seating transparency.

The Growing National Regulatory Landscape

The decision to hold off on a formal probe comes as several other states hosting tournament matches have taken a confrontational approach toward FIFA. In May, New York and New Jersey initiated a joint investigation into the organization’s pricing models. This week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton escalated tensions by announcing a formal investigation into allegations that FIFA misled fans by promising premium views before altering seating maps, effectively charging higher prices for lower-quality experiences.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has also engaged with the global soccer governing body, issuing a request for information to determine whether FIFA’s practices violate California’s consumer protection laws. These legal challenges represent a significant pushback against the ticketing infrastructure of one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Prioritizing Consumer Security

While Missouri is not currently targeting FIFA’s internal pricing mechanisms, the Attorney General’s office is not remaining idle regarding the tournament. Stosberg noted that the state is shifting its resources toward protecting attendees from secondary threats, specifically the surge in fraudulent ticket sales and travel scams that often accompany high-profile global events.
